Maiduguri, Nigeria — The iNews Times, Unidentified gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents have kidnapped no fewer than 12 female farmers in the Mussa district of Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. The victims were reportedly ambushed and seized on Saturday evening while returning from their farms.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the attack on Sunday through its Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, who disclosed that an investigation had commenced.
“There was an abduction yesterday the abduction of 12 females farmers when they were coming back from their farms in Askira-Uba, by suspected Boko Haram. The details are still sketchy, but efforts are underway,” Daso said.
The latest abduction adds to a troubling surge in attacks across northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target schools, farming communities, churches and travellers.
Just last Monday, 25 schoolgirls were abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, during an attack that also claimed the life of the school’s principal.
In Niger State, over 300 schoolchildren from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri were taken by bandits last Tuesday. The Catholic Diocese has since confirmed that 50 of the abducted pupils managed to escape.
Similarly, gunmen stormed the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Isegun, in Eruku, Kwara State, killing three worshippers and abducting 38 members of the congregation. According to the Kwara State Government, all 38 have now regained their freedom.
Northern communities continue to grapple with an escalating wave of insecurity, as authorities intensify efforts to curb kidnappings and restore public safety.
