Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the victim sustained critical injuries during the fire and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about a circulating social media report depicting a fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt,” said SP Iringe-Koko.

“According to the report, one Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level female undergraduate student of the University of Port Harcourt, allegedly set her boyfriend, Saint Sunny Amadi, a 32-year-old male from the Elibrada community in Emohua LGA, ablaze in a room, resulting in severe injuries.”

The police said they received a report about the incident at approximately 11:12 a.m., prompting detectives from the Choba Division to immediately visit the scene and the hospital where the victim was admitted.

“Unfortunately, the victim later succumbed to injuries and died while on admission,” the PPRO confirmed.

The suspect, who also sustained injuries in the fire, was later tracked to a hospital, where she is currently under medical supervision. Police say she is also heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child.

“Due to her critical condition, she is unable to provide a detailed account of the incident,” Iringe-Koko added.

“However, she will be formally interviewed once her health stabilizes.”

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, police authorities have launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.

The Command urged the public to refrain from speculation as the facts are still being gathered.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has called for calm and patience as investigators work to uncover the full story.

“The Command assures the public that justice will be served,” CP Adepoju said. “We are committed to ensuring a transparent and diligent investigation of this tragic incident.”

The case has drawn significant public attention, especially on social media, with many calling for clarity and accountability.

The Police Command has pledged to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
