Ohanaeze Sets Last Saturday of January for Igbo Thanksgiving

…Ohanaeze further urged all churches in Igbo land to actively observe the maiden edition of the event on Saturday, January 31,

ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has designated the last Saturday of every January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day, describing it as a period for collective appreciation of God’s abiding mercy and grace upon the Igbo nation.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the organisation’s Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, who said the decision was taken at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 20.

According to Chukwu, the resolution followed an appeal from the Igbo College of Bishops, represented at the meeting by Archbishop David Onuoha and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze of the Owerri and Enugu Anglican Provinces, alongside other clerics.

He explained that the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, in his address, called on Ndị Igbo at home and in the Diaspora to recognise the profound spiritual importance of the day.

Part of the statement read that the NEC formally adopted the last Saturday of January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day, following a request by the Igbo College of Bishops for a review of an earlier resolution by the Imeobi Ohanaeze meeting held on December 23, 2025, in Enugu, which had initially proposed the last Sunday of January.

The bishops’ appeal, rooted in spiritual considerations, prompted the NEC to approve the adjustment to the last Saturday of January, a decision that would be communicated at the next Imeobi meeting.

Senator Mbata described the day as an opportunity for shared thanksgiving to God for His continued grace and mercy upon the Igbo people, in spite of the many challenges faced over the years.

Ohanaeze further urged all churches in Igbo land to actively observe the maiden edition of the event on Saturday, January 31, 2026, between 9am and 12 noon, with prayers, adoration and thanksgiving to God.

The organisation concluded by calling on all Igbo people to participate fully and help establish the day as a unifying spiritual landmark for the Igbo nation.
