‎…Preliminary findings by the police indicated that the victims were exposed to hazardous gases in a confined space.

‎‎PLATEAU, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that 37 people lost their lives, while 26 others were hospitalised following a gas inhalation incident at a mining site in Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area.

‎The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, made this known on Wednesday night in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Alabo Alfred.

‎According to Ewah, the tragedy occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on February 18, 2026, when toxic gases including lead oxide, sulphur, and carbon monoxide were suddenly released in a poorly ventilated mining area.

‎He explained that tactical teams, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, were deployed to secure the scene and determine the cause of the incident. Rock, soil, and mineral samples were also taken for laboratory analysis. Authorities confirmed there were no signs of an explosion or explosive devices at the site.

‎The command boss directed the Area Commander in Langtang, the Commander of 66 PMF Shendam, and Divisional Police Officers in Bashar and Wase to mobilise personnel to the scene, where the area was sealed off as rescue efforts continued.

‎Preliminary findings indicated that the victims were exposed to hazardous gases in a confined space. The remains of the deceased have since been handed over to their families for burial in line with their religious customs.

‎To prevent further unrest and similar incidents, the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Operations and the State CID were also deployed to assess the situation.

‎Ewah extended his condolences to the bereaved families and residents of the community, warning against illegal mining activities and reaffirming the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He also urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.
