OGUN, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Ogun State Police Command has finalised arrangements to apprehend and prosecute a female TikTok user, Mirabel, after she allegedly confessed that her earlier rape allegation was fabricated.
According to reports, she made the admission during a phone conversation with social media personality VeryDarkMan, also known as VDM. An audio recording of the exchange, shared online by VDM and obtained by the iNews Times on Thursday, captured her acknowledging that parts of her initial story were false.
In the recording, she was heard pleading for help and apologising after being confronted with messages she had earlier claimed were sent by her alleged attacker. She also reportedly admitted to creating a threatening TikTok account herself to strengthen her claims, explaining that she had been taking medication and was not in a clear state of mind when she posted the videos.
A police source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, disclosed that a Divisional Police Officer and other senior officers were at the hospital where Mirabel was receiving treatment. The source stated that she would be taken into custody once discharged and formally charged in court, noting that the move was intended to deter others from making false allegations.
Mirabel had initially alleged on TikTok that an unknown man broke into her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State and raped her, sparking widespread outrage and calls for action against sexual violence.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the Commissioner of Police directed the DPO of the Ibafo Division to promptly contact Mirabel after the report emerged. She explained that Mirabel reported to the Ibafo Police Station, where preliminary findings indicated the incident occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction.
Odutola said Mirabel was immediately taken to a medical facility for examination and urgent care before being transferred to the Ogijo Police Station for proper documentation and further investigation. Due to her fragile health condition, she was later referred for extended medical treatment to aid her recovery and support the ongoing probe.
Earlier, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed it had contacted a close associate of Mirabel, who said she had been discharged from hospital. The agency clarified that the alleged incident happened in Ogun State and fell outside its jurisdiction, adding that all relevant information had been passed to the appropriate authorities.
When approached on Thursday for further comments, the police spokesperson said the command was still reviewing the situation and would release an official statement in due course.
