Police’s Tinted Permit Review Sparks Mixed Reactions

Mixed Reaction as Police Begin Tinted Permit Review

Tinted Permit

…the IGP announced resumption of issuance of tinted permits across the country

The iNews Times reports that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is set to generate billions of Naira for the government through the yearly renewal of tinted permits.

The iNews Times learnt that the NPF could generate about N167.56 billion yearly if 11.8 million vehicles in Nigeria acquire tinted glass permits at N14,200 each.

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the resumption of the issuance of tinted glass permits across the country in April 2025.

The permits will incorporate distinctive features such as QR codes, unique serial numbers, and digital holograms to enhance enforcement efficiency and security.

The move is in response to rising concerns and complaints from the public about law enforcement agents harassing vehicle owners for using factory-fitted tinted windows.

Tinted Permit was previously banned in June 2022, the NPF said the ban was a proactive move to bolster national security and tackle criminal activities linked to the misuse of tinted glasses.

However, some motorists have expressed concerns about the yearly renewal of tinted permits and the cost.

Cyril Anyika, a motorist, said, “N14,200 is a lot to be paid yearly; we pay for roadworthiness, Central Motor Registry (CMR), insurance, and now N14,200.”

On the other hand, Adeola Tokan-Lawal, Managing Director of AutofixR, believes that the tinted permit should be renewed yearly, considering the current price of cars.

“A car bought N1 million five years ago is now N7 million, and if you are asked to pay N14,200 for a tinted permit for the same car, it’s not too much to do,” he said.

The NPF has however promised to review the proposal for yearly renewal and update the public accordingly.

“We are going to review it and speak on it officially,” said Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer.

The implementation of the tinted glass permit scheme is expected to boost revenue for the government, but motorists and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting further clarification on the implementation and pricing of the permits.
