Ekwueme Square Now for Government Functions Only – Soludo

…Ekwueme Square, now considered an extension of the Light House.

Awka, Nigeria, The iNews Times | Anambra state government has announced restrictions of Dr Alex Ekwueme Square from private events, saying it is strictly for government functions.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the decision formed part of resolutions reached at the Anambra State Executive Council’s (ANSEC) second meeting of 2026 held at the Light House, Awka.

According to him, the Council resolved that Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, now considered an extension of the Light House, will no longer be available for private events and is henceforth exclusive to government use.

He added that the Multipurpose Arena of the Awka Township Stadium will now host private events previously held at the Square, following the new Ekwueme Square restriction.

Mefor further disclosed Council’s approval of three major events for the swearing-in of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim as Governor and Deputy Governor for a second term, with subcommittees established to ensure smooth execution.

“The three events are an interdenominational service on Sunday, March 15; a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, March 17; and a thanksgiving service on Sunday, March 22,” he said.

The Council also evaluated and welcomed the sentencing of Anambra native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as Akwa Ọkụkụ Tiwara Akị, and the destruction of his shrine and Oke Ite pots, describing it as part of the state’s fight for moral and social rebirth.

According to the statement, the Council described the action as a significant step toward re-establishing Anambra’s social and moral order, reiterating the Igbo philosophy, Aka aja aja na-ebute ọnụ mmanụ mmanụ (hard work leads to happiness), as the foundation of the state’s efforts.

The Executive Council also approved and awarded funds for several projects, including:

  • Release of N164,396,750.11 as cost overrun for the construction of an IAAF standard five-lane spray system track and natural grass pitch at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex, awarded to Phimax Global Enterprises Ltd.
  • Release of N72,628,864.59 for road marking and installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10.043 km newly constructed Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road.
  • Release of N121,948,995.00 for the supply and installation of ten 40-ft containers across multiple locations in the state as temporary accommodation for security personnel, awarded to Achufusi Ventures.
  • Release of N172,192,325.77 for Lot 1: asphalt surfacing of the internal dual carriage driveway at the ICC Awka.
  • Release of N175,388,731.57 for Lot 2: asphalt surfacing of the service lane to the State House of Assembly and the High Court Complex, Awka.
  • Release of N72,628,864.59 for road marking and installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10.043 km Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road, awarded to S.N.U. Ventures.

The government maintained that the decisions, including the Ekwueme Square restriction, are aimed at improving coordination of official activities and strengthening governance structures in the state.
