Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times, reports that the ASTUC Youth inauguration saw the Anambra State Town Unions Council Youth Wing swear in 21 local government youth mayors, three zonal liaison officers and twelve youth leaders to coordinate youth activities across their respective communities.
The ASTUC Youth inauguration, witnessed by state executives, former youth mayors, community leaders and youth executives, was held at the ASTUC Secretariat Hall within the Government House, Awka.
President General of ASTUC Youth, Ken Okoli, said the inauguration of the newly elected youth leaders was in line with the organisation’s bye-laws to formally welcome them into ASTUC Youth.
He explained that the swearing-in of the mayors was also a constitutional mandate empowering them to represent the youth body at the local government level and coordinate activities within their LGAs.
According to him, the swearing-in of the zonal liaison officers during the ASTUC Youth inauguration was aimed at strengthening grassroots implementation of the council’s programmes.
He urged the leaders to prioritise community interest, build bridges and promote harmonious relationships among communities for the benefit of Anambra youths.
Okoli further tasked the new mayors and youth leaders to serve as ambassadors of peace in their communities, noting that such commitment would foster unity, love and collective development.
Highlighting the unveiling of a mentorship initiative at the ASTUC Youth inauguration, Okoli said the Career Development Mentorship Programme is structured to train experienced graduates as mentors who will guide younger mentees navigating real-life challenges.
He disclosed that the programme targets training 10,000 mentors to deliver career seminars and mentorship services aimed at helping youths make informed career decisions and develop leadership skills.
Speaking on behalf of the mayors, Orumba North Mayor, Comrade Ikechukwu Robison, and Oyi Mayor, Chief Sir Chinedu Nwokedi, expressed appreciation to ASTUC Youth leadership and pledged inclusive leadership alongside youth empowerment initiatives.
Also speaking, youth leader from Eziowelle community, Comrade Bob Francis Nzekwesi, promised to promote peace, unity and youth engagement programmes while urging youths to shun criminality, cultism and drug abuse.
The elected youth leaders emerged from Abetete, Nanka, Eziowelle, Igbariam, Amaokpala, Ukpor, Amaetiti, Omor, Omasi, Umueri, Awgbu and Eziagu communities.
Dignitaries present included pioneer member of the association, Comrade Francis Chibuko; Barr Godwin Ibeabuchi who handled the legal proceedings; and Dunukofia Youth Mayor, Comrade Chijioke Egbuna, among others.
