…ACTDA says removal of obstructing structures is to make way for the Awka road expansion.
Awka, Anambra State — The iNews Times | The Awka road expansion drive gained momentum on Friday as the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) commenced demolition of fences and other structures encroaching on Ikenga Umuawulu Street, Okpuno, near Mable Arc Hotel.
The exercise, part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades within the Awka Capital Territory, is aimed at expanding and modernising the interconnecting road linking the Pinnacle area to Abakaliki Street.
Head of Enforcement Unit, ACTDA, Mr. Ukachukwu Okonkwo, said the affected property owners had earlier been warned against building beyond approved setbacks but failed to comply, necessitating the removal of obstructing structures to allow for proper alignment under the Awka road expansion plan.
According to him, the project is designed to improve traffic flow within the capital city and ensure compliance with approved urban development standards. He explained that the road design includes shoulders and walkways that must be accommodated within the approved right-of-way.
Okonkwo disclosed that the road measures approximately 8.4 metres in width and will feature asphalt surfacing, stone-based construction and a functional drainage system to mitigate erosion.
Engineers supervising the project confirmed that grading and construction of drainage channels are currently ongoing. The work involves excavation to a depth of 40 centimetres below asphalt level before final surfacing, a process aimed at ensuring durability and structural stability.
Project surveyor, Mr. Ezeugo Christopher, noted that residents largely cooperated during the demolition exercise.
Some residents expressed support for the development. Chibuike Nwoye described the road as previously being in poor condition, particularly during the rainy season when erosion posed serious challenges. Another resident, Chidiebele Ebuka, commended the orderly execution of the exercise and urged authorities to maintain fairness across affected areas. Emmanuel Okafor also welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the completed road would significantly enhance accessibility.
The initiative forms part of the broader infrastructure development programme of the Anambra State Government under Governor Charles Soludo.
