BREAKING: Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Exit, Appoints Tunji Disu Acting IGP ‎

‎…Tinubu praised his “decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,”

‎‎ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

‎Earlier, iNews Times reported that Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday, citing pressing family reasons.

‎Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was midway into a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027, in accordance with the amended Police Act.

‎In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Tinubu confirmed receiving the resignation letter and expressed gratitude for Egbetokun’s service to the country.

‎Tinubu praised his “decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,” highlighting his dedication, professionalism, and firm commitment to reinforcing the country’s internal security framework during his time in office.

‎The statement noted that, given the prevailing security challenges and in line with existing laws and legal guidance, the President approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect.

‎According to the statement, Tinubu is confident that Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and leadership qualities will provide stable and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.

‎It further stated that in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, Tinubu will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

‎The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and well-equipped to carry out its constitutional mandate.
