…IPOB leader had alleged in 2017 that Buhari died years earlier and was replaced by a lookalike from Sudan.
Nigeria – The iNews Times reports that the news of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s death has sparked a wave of reactions across social media, with some Nigerians reviving long-standing conspiracy theories about his identity.
Since the announcement of Buhari’s passing in a London clinic on Sunday at the age of 82, users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook have been divided with some mourning, mocking, and questioning the narrative.
One theory making the rounds again is the claim first pushed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who alleged in 2017 that Buhari had died years earlier and was replaced by a lookalike from Sudan.
The claim, widely dismissed at the time, has resurfaced in fresh debates and viral posts.
“This is why you don’t joke with what Nnamdi Kanu said,” one user posted.
Another wrote, “So the man they buried now… who exactly have we been calling president?”
While government officials have consistently dismissed the ‘Jubril from Sudan’ narrative as false and ridiculous, its reappearance highlights the deep mistrust and political suspicions within sections of the Nigerian public.
As official plans for Buhari’s burial take shape, the online chatter shows no signs of slowing down, The iNews Times reports.
