Carter Bridge Reconstruction Plan Gets FEC Nod as Government Moves to Demolish Bridge

…the Carter Bridge reconstruction is expected to significantly affect traffic patterns in Lagos.

Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times | The Carter Bridge reconstruction plan has received federal approval after Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) authorised the demolition and complete rebuilding of the major Lagos bridge.

The decision was announced on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting chaired by Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Minister of Works David Umahi said the council also approved N5.6 billion for the engagement of specialised engineering consultants who will handle the design and cost assessment for the Carter Bridge reconstruction project.

“Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it must be taken down and rebuilt entirely,” Umahi said.

According to the minister, the decision followed extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders and had previously received backing from FEC during an earlier deliberation.

One of Lagos’ Busiest Routes

The Carter Bridge reconstruction is expected to significantly affect traffic patterns in Lagos, as the bridge remains one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.

The bridge connects Lagos Island with the mainland and serves as a critical route for thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles daily.

Authorities say the reconstruction is necessary to ensure long-term structural safety and modernise the aging infrastructure.

More Infrastructure Projects Approved

Umahi further revealed that the Federal Executive Council approved six additional large-scale infrastructure projects during the same meeting.

The projects include major highway upgrades and reconstructions across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

According to the minister, the federal government aims to complete and commission at least four major infrastructure projects in each zone by May 15.

“These are substantial infrastructure initiatives, not mere stopgap measures,” Umahi emphasised.

The approvals form part of the administration’s broader strategy to accelerate critical infrastructure development across the country.
