…”We don’t just need new names. We need new values, new visions” — Charly Boy

The iNews Times reports that a popular Nigerian singer and activist, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, has expressed strong skepticism about the opposition coalition formed to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

The coalition, comprising heavyweights from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and aggrieved members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official platform.

Charly Boy questioned the motivations behind the coalition, suggesting that its members are driven by selfish desires for power rather than a genuine interest in Nigeria’s progress.

Taking to his official Facebook page, he wrote, “Coalitions are forming, but let’s not pretend that every alliance is progress. Sometimes, it’s just old wolves in new agbada.”

He further asked, “Are they fighting for you, or fighting to sit where their enemies used to sit? Are they shouting ‘enough is enough’ because they’ve changed…Or because they’re no longer the ones benefitting?”

The entertainer emphasized the need for new values, visions, and leaders who can live by them, stating, “We don’t just need new names. We need new values, new visions, and people with the guts to live by them. 2027 is not about revenge. It’s about rescue.”

Charly Boy’s sentiments echo concerns raised by other Nigerians, including activist Omoyele Sowore, who has distanced himself from the movement, describing the opposition figures as corrupt.

The opposition coalition has faced several challenges, including internal disagreements and credibility issues. Some opposition parties, such as the PDP and LP, have expressed reluctance to join forces, with the PDP opting out of the coalition arrangement.

The coalition’s adoption of the ADC as its platform has also sparked controversy, with some stakeholders questioning the party’s ability to accommodate high-profile defectors.

The ruling APC has dismissed the opposition coalition, describing its leaders as “people against Nigeria.”

The party’s national secretary, Ajibola Basiru, predicted that the coalition would fail in its bid to unseat President Tinubu in 2027, citing the President’s proven track record of excellence and visionary leadership.
