Speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze speaks on Children’s day

…calls on stakeholders to invest heavily in key areas that guarantee quality and affordable education for children

The iNews Times reports that in 1925, International Children’s Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare. Since 1950, it is celebrated on 1 June in many countries that were part of Eastern Bloc and Non-Aligned Movement, which follow the suggestion from Women’s International Democratic Federation.

World Children’s Day is celebrated on 20 November to commemorate the issuance of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1959, along with the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on that date in 1989. In some countries, it is Children’s Week and not Children’s Day.

Speaking on the celebration which is being celebrated in Nigeria today May 27, 2025, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze called on government at different levels as well as stakeholders in education sector to invest heavily in key areas that will guarantee quality and affordable education, healthcare, safe and secure environment for Nigerian children.

Rt Hon Udeze who spoke on behalf of the State Legislative, enjoined parents, teachers and guardians to see proper training of a child as a collective responsibility, urging them to continue to give their best in raising responsible children that will  advance the country to a long-lasting greatness.

The Speaker’s Goodwill Message which was released by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Madu and made available to newsmen in Awka, lauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s genuine interest and efforts towards bequeathing Anambra children sound education and brighter future.

Rt Hon Udeze commended the Governor for offering free education to state’s pupils and students from primary to secondary school in addition to recruiting over 8,000 teachers and other education related accomplishments aimed at repositioning education in the State.

He noted that the Anambra State House of Assembly has enacted the Child Rights Law to ensure that children are not discriminated in any way, and to provide a better life for them through education and skills.

Rt Hon Udeze while praising Anambra pupils and students for bringing honour to the State in diverse fields of endeavour including academics, sports, the arts and entertainment, advised them to take their studies seriously and abstain from acts that could mar their future.
