Cholera outbreak in Sudan

…the Cholera outbreak comes as the city faces a severe crisis amid ongoing conflict

The iNews Times reports that a deadly cholera outbreak has claimed no fewer than 70 lives in just two days in Sudan’s war-torn capital, Khartoum, with health officials warning of a mounting health emergency.

According to the health ministry for Khartoum state, 942 new infections and 25 deaths were recorded on Wednesday, following 1,177 cases and 45 deaths on Tuesday.

The Cholera outbreak comes as the city faces a severe crisis amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The war has devastated Khartoum’s health and sanitation infrastructure, with up to 90 percent of hospitals in the conflict’s main battlegrounds forced out of service.

The cholera outbreak has piled further pressure on the healthcare system, with authorities warning of a potential humanitarian crisis.

The UN has sounded the alarm, with the humanitarian agency OCHA noting “significant discrepancies” in official data and warning that the situation is likely to worsen with the arrival of the rainy season.

“Sudan is on the brink of a full-scale public health disaster,” said Eatizaz Yousif, the International Rescue Committee’s Sudan director.

Cholera vaccinations have begun in Jebel Awila, the hardest-hit district, and the World Health Organization has delivered 22 metric tons of cholera and emergency health supplies to respond to local efforts.

The conflict in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced 13 million since it erupted in April 2023.

The choloutbreak has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with aid agencies warning of a potential disaster if urgent action is not taken.

With over 1 million children at risk in cholera-affected areas of Khartoum, the situation remains dire, and international organizations are calling for immediate assistance to prevent further spread of disease and alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
