BENUE, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Residents of Turan District in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State have been thrown into renewed mourning after a fresh attack by suspected armed herders left two farmers dead and forced several others to flee their homes.

The attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Imande Avur and later spread to the neighbouring communities of Abande and Mbaikyor, where armed assailants reportedly stormed the area, creating panic and triggering mass displacement.

The victims were identified as Elder Abur Alam and his son, Ikyaa, both known as peaceful farmers who were attacked while tending to their farms.

Confirming the incident, a former councillor in Kwande LGA, Lawrence Akerigba, expressed grave concern over the persistent violence in the district.

“Once again, our community has been brutally attacked. Two innocent farmers were killed, many residents have been displaced, and fear has gripped the entire area,” Akerigba said.

He revealed that communities in Turan District have faced sustained assaults over the past two weeks, with residents experiencing daily killings, destruction of livelihoods, and widespread displacement.

“Our people are being attacked and killed almost every day, and it feels like we have been abandoned. The violence has become frequent, unchecked, and devastating,” he lamented.

Akerigba also accused security agencies of failing to respond promptly, noting that affected families have received little or no assistance despite the escalating humanitarian situation.

He described the situation as alarming and called on the government and security agencies to act swiftly to stop the attacks, safeguard lives, and restore peace to the affected communities.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had not yet received official information regarding the incident.
