ASABA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have recovered a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK snatched at gunpoint in Enugu in 2023, intercepting it just as it was about to be sold to an unsuspecting buyer in Asaba, the state capital.

The vehicle, bearing registration number NZM10AP, was traced to a parking lot on Former Deputy Road, where officers swooped in on the dealers following intelligence gathered by the B Division, Asaba.

According to State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Edewor Akponegware, on August 5, led a swift operation that resulted in the arrest of one Chinedu Eze, who allegedly claimed ownership of the luxury vehicle during the sale negotiations.

Preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle had been registered in April 2023 but was re-registered in 2025 under suspicious circumstances. The original owner confirmed it was stolen at gunpoint in April 2023 in Abakpa, Enugu State, during which the attackers shot him.

In a separate operation on August 4, police also arrested two suspected armed robbers, identified as 22-year-old Thywill Selvin of Poly Road, Ogwashi-Ukwu, and 32-year-old Guntim Bako of Kwale Junction.

The suspects were apprehended after attempting to flee a crime scene along Chelsea Street, Ogwashi-Ukwu, on sighting the operatives.

The DPO of Ogwashi-Ukwu Division, CSP Okoyomon Israel, had mobilised the Anti-Crime Squad alongside local vigilantes after receiving a distress call about an ongoing robbery.

The swift response led to the suspects’ arrest and the recovery of a cache of arms and stolen items, including a pump-action rifle with one live cartridge, a Beretta pistol with six rounds, assault rifle ammunition, motorcycles, 25 mobile phones, laptops, a PS4 game console, home theatre equipment, and other valuables.

SP Edafe confirmed that several victims have already identified their recovered property.

Commending the officers, State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, described the coordinated operations as a “crushing setback to criminal elements” in Delta State.

“The recovery of a stolen luxury vehicle, the seizure of dangerous firearms, and the arrest of notorious suspects are testaments to our determination to make this state unsafe for criminals,” CP Abaniwonda said.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to aggressive, intelligence-led policing, urging the public to promptly report suspicious activities to help prevent crime.
