…as growing political debate surrounds the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The iNews Times reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what it described as the controversial passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the National Assembly.
Reacting on Wednesday, ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the APC-led government of undermining Nigeria’s democracy through what he termed an alarming display of political impunity.
In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Abdullahi warned that such actions should not be allowed to become “the death of our democracy.”
“With this level of impunity, we pray that the APC does not become the death of our democracy,” he wrote.
‘Afraid of Free and Fair Elections’
The ADC spokesman further alleged that despite controlling the majority of state governments across the country, the APC remained apprehensive about conducting free and transparent elections.
“Almost all the governors are in their party, yet they are afraid of a free and fair election. But Nigerians will never surrender to tyranny. We have seen this before,” Abdullahi stated.
His comments add to the growing political debate surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which has triggered mixed reactions among opposition parties and civil society groups.
While the APC has defended the legislative process, opposition voices argue that certain provisions in the amendment could weaken electoral transparency ahead of future general elections.
