Police officers attack JED staff for disconnecting barracks over unpaid electricity bills

…Jos Electricity Distribution Plc plans to write a protest letter to the Inspector-General of Police

The iNews Times reports that the Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JED Plc) has condemned the brutal attack on its staff by members of the Nigerian Mobile Police Force in Makurdi, Benue State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday when police officers stormed the company’s office and assaulted a security guard, Mr. Hassan Ademu, in response to the disconnection of electricity supply to the Mobile Barracks due to non-payment of bills amounting to N112,420,658.65.

According to Dr. Friday Elijah, Head of Corporate Services at JED Plc, the police officers “stormed the office in a commando style and descended on the security guard on duty.” The security guard was reportedly “beaten to a stupor and had his head broken.”

The management of JED Plc has announced plans to write a protest letter to the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, over the attack on its staff.

Dr. Elijah expressed serious concern over the attack and vowed to take further action to protect its employees.

“The management has also warned that the mobile barracks will remain disconnected until the outstanding debt is settled,” the statement read.

JED Plc’s decision to disconnect the electricity supply was made after the mobile barracks failed to pay their bills, leading to the confrontation.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Udeme Edet said she was yet to receive a report on the incident. “I am yet to receive the report,” Edet said.
