…Bucknor-Akerele while calling for cancellation of the polls said there is a clear effort to rig the election.
Lagos, Nigeria – The iNews Times reports that a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, has called for the immediate cancellation of the ongoing local government elections in the state, citing widespread irregularities and disenfranchisement of voters.
Bucknor-Akerele in an interview with Nigeria Info on Saturday, voiced strong criticism of the electoral process, stating that she was unable to vote at her designated polling unit due to her name being absent from the voters’ register.
“I have been to my own unit, my name is not there,” she said, expressing frustration over the disorganization at polling centres.
She also raised concerns about the sudden and unannounced relocation of polling units, which she believes was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters.
“There are units supposed to be in front of Eko Hotel, they have brought them here to Ajose Adeogun,” she said, referring to changes she described as disruptive and confusing.
The former deputy governor alleged that the irregularities were orchestrated in favour of a particular political party.
“There is a clear effort to rig the election in favour of one party. Many people are not able to vote because they have completely disrupted all the polling units,” she stated.
Bucknor-Akerele urged the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to annul the election, pointing to what she described as systemic failures that undermined the integrity of the process.
The local government elections are being conducted across Lagos State’s 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, to fill critical chairmanship and councillorship positions.
However, reports of low voter turnout and logistical lapses have continued to mar the exercise in several parts of the state.
