Female NSCDC Officer Dies in Show-of-Force Exercise

…FCT female NSCDC officer dies as a result of a drill accident.

Abuja, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that a female NSCDC officer dies after being crushed by an operational van during a tactical “show of force” exercise in the Federal Capital Territory.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred during a demonstration by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Female Strike Force, also known as the Female Squad, and was captured in a 58-second video that went viral on social media Saturday.

The footage showed a black operational van with red wheels bearing the inscription “Female Squad” moving ahead of another vehicle marked “Female Strike Force FCT Command.” During a turn, the lead vehicle ran over a female officer, pinning her underneath.

Several NSCDC officers and bystanders were seen rushing to the scene, lifting the van in a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped officer before she was moved into a waiting ambulance.

While the Corps has yet to issue a formal press release, The Cable reported that the NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, confirmed in a telephone conversation on Saturday afternoon that the female NSCDC officer dies as a result of the accident.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased officer has not been made public. However, Babawale reportedly assured that a detailed statement would be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
