ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Anambra State Fire Service has urged residents and property owners to routinely inspect their electrical appliances and wiring installations following an outbreak at No. 11 Olisa Nwobo Street, near Commissioner Quarters, GRA, Awka.
The iNews Times gathered from a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Media and Publicity Unit, headed by Chukwudi Chiketa, that firefighters responded swiftly to the emergency and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the building and nearby structures.
The blaze, which occurred on Friday, was said to have been triggered by sparks from an electrical appliance in one of the rooms in the building.
Although no casualties were recorded, household items and other valuables were damaged before firefighters arrived and battled the flames for several hours.
Part of the statement read, “The Anambra State agency successfully contained the inferno that occurred at No. 11 Olisa Nwobo Street, by Commissioner Quarters, GRA, Awka, on Friday, March 7, 2026.
“The state agency received the distress call at about 1315 hours, and firefighters responded promptly to the scene.
“Through swift and professional intervention, the inferno was brought under control, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties.”
According to the agency, preliminary investigations indicated that sparks from an electrical appliance ignited combustible materials inside a one-bedroom apartment located on the first floor of the one-storey residential building.
“Although household items were affected, no casualty was recorded. The blaze was largely restricted to a single room within the affected apartment.
“Firefighting operations were successfully concluded, and personnel withdrew from the scene at about 1545 hours the same day,” the statement added.
Residents were advised to carry out regular checks on their electrical appliances and wiring installations to prevent similar incidents.
It further encouraged members of the public to promptly report blaze outbreaks or other emergencies to the nearest fire station or contact any of the agency’s emergency numbers to ensure a quick response.
