Fresh Attacks Leave Many Dead in Benue Communities

Residents Killed, Houses Burnt in Fresh Benue Attacks

Benue herdsmen attack

…in a separate attack earlier that day, three youths were ambushed and killed in EdikwG’Icho.

The iNews Times reports that several people were killed when suspected herdsmen launched fresh attacks on Monday evening in Agatu and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State.

According to sources, one Sunday Dutse, a native of Odejo and younger brother to a former chairman of Agatu Local Government, was killed along the Odugbeho-Ogbaulu road.

Dutse had been displaced from his community due to earlier herdsmen attacks and was taking refuge in Ogwule-Kaduna.

The iNews Times learnt that in a separate attack earlier that day, three youths were ambushed and killed in EdikwG’Icho, a community in Apa LGA. Two of the victims were from EdikwG’Icho, while the third hailed from Ugbokpo.

The latest assaults occurred despite a recent visit from top military authorities, including the Chief of Army Staff, who promised increased security measures in troubled parts of the state.

The Agatu Council Chairman, Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attacks, stating that 10 people were killed and seven houses were burnt down.

However, another report suggests that up to 13 people may have been killed in the attacks.

The hoodlums were reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons and looted properties, including animals.

The Benue State government and security agencies have been alerted, with efforts underway to mobilize security forces to the affected areas.

These renewed assaults have raised concerns about the effectiveness of recent military promises to restore peace in the region.

The incidents have left residents in fear, questioning the government’s ability to provide adequate security.

The violence is part of a larger pattern of herdsmen attacks in Benue State, which have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of communities.

Security agencies are working to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of the area, iNews Times reports.
