EDO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Gunmen have killed a senior palace chief in Iduah Kingdom, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, and abducted two of his daughters.
The victim, Chief Jimah Jacob Ogboi, was reportedly attacked at his home on Monday night. According to sources, the gunmen entered the residence and shot the chief at close range. His wife was also attacked with machetes and other weapons, leaving her seriously injured.
One of Chief Ogboi’s sons, Lucky, said he was away buying an item when the attack occurred. “I received a call that my father had been shot. When I returned home, I found my mother critically injured, and my two sisters had been taken,” he recounted.
A community source revealed that the incident led to an emergency meeting of local elders to discuss strategies for securing the release of the abducted daughters and addressing the factors behind the gunmen attack.
The traditional ruler, HRH Alhaji Amedu Momoh, appealed to the Edo State Government and security agencies for urgent intervention and enhanced protection in the area. “About four gunmen attacked one of our chiefs’ homes, shot him, and abducted two of his daughters. The Nigerian Police and other security agencies have been present since the incident,” he said.
He added, “We need help to tackle security challenges. While there had been relative calm, it seems the gunmen have regrouped.” The monarch also raised concerns about rising attacks on farmlands by suspected herdsmen.
Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Command spokesperson CSP Eno Ikoedem said investigations have begun. She noted that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, along with other senior officers, is in Ekpoma, Edo Central, to manage the security situation. “The Commissioner and top officers are in the area to prevent further attacks. The police have launched an investigation into the killing and abduction,” she stated.
