INEC Should Recognize Bala Gombe as ADC Chairman – Wike

…reinforces Wike’s belief that INEC Should Recognize Gombe based on his interpretation of the court’s direction.

ABUJA, Nigeria — INEC Should Recognize Nafiu Bala Gombe as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who spoke on Friday amid the party’s deepening leadership crisis.

The iNews Times reports that Wike made the assertion during a media briefing in Abuja, where he addressed the ongoing dispute within the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recent decision to suspend recognition of all factions within the party.

The minister’s comments come at a critical time for the ADC, which is currently embroiled in a legal battle before the Federal High Court over its national leadership structure.

INEC Suspends Recognition of ADC Factions

The controversy escalated after INEC removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively.

In addition, the electoral body declined to recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking judicial affirmation as the substantive national chairman.

INEC announced that it would not recognise any faction within the party until the final determination of a substantive suit pending before the Federal High Court. The commission also stated that it would not monitor conventions or congresses organised by rival groups until the legal dispute is resolved.

The decision effectively places the party in administrative suspension, limiting its ability to conduct officially recognised internal activities.

Wike’s Interpretation of the Judgment

While reacting to the development, Wike argued that the commission’s position was inconsistent with what he believes the legal situation demands.

“In my own opinion, INEC, by that judgment, ought to have recognized Bala Gombe as the ADC national chairman,” Wike said.

Although he disagreed with INEC’s refusal to recognise any faction, the minister added that the ADC should consider the commission’s stance as a temporary safeguard pending judicial clarity.

“ADC should be happy that INEC said, ‘Look, we are not going to recognize any of you until you sort your matter in court,’” he stated.

The statement reinforces Wike’s belief that INEC Should Recognize Bala Gombe based on his interpretation of the court’s direction.

ADC Accuses INEC of Taking Sides

Before Wike’s intervention, the ADC had accused INEC of acting in violation of the law and allegedly taking sides in the leadership dispute.

Party officials argue that the commission’s actions may amount to interference in internal party affairs, particularly when the matter remains sub judice.

However, INEC has maintained that its decision is grounded in legal caution and the need to avoid premature recognition that could complicate the judicial process.

Legal analysts say such disputes often place electoral bodies in delicate positions, requiring strict adherence to court proceedings to prevent accusations of bias.

Broader Political Implications

The debate over whether INEC Should Recognize a particular faction highlights a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s political landscape leadership tussles within parties that spill into the courtroom.

Internal party disputes frequently disrupt administrative processes and weaken political cohesion, especially when factions seek regulatory validation from INEC.

Political observers note that until the Federal High Court delivers a definitive ruling, the ADC may struggle to conduct official activities requiring electoral oversight.

The suspension of recognition also means that any conventions or congresses organised during this period will not receive INEC monitoring, potentially affecting their legitimacy.

Legal Process Takes Center Stage

The substantive suit before the Federal High Court is expected to determine the rightful leadership of the party.

Until that ruling is delivered, INEC’s decision to suspend recognition of all factions remains operative.

While Wike insists that INEC Should Recognize Bala Gombe based on his reading of the legal developments, the commission appears committed to awaiting explicit judicial clarification.

Constitutional experts emphasize that electoral bodies must act within the framework of court directives to avoid institutional overreach.

What Lies Ahead for ADC

For the African Democratic Congress, the immediate priority remains resolving the internal crisis through lawful means.

Political stakeholders warn that prolonged instability could undermine the party’s credibility and electoral prospects.

Wike’s comments add another dimension to the unfolding drama, drawing national attention to the dispute and intensifying debate over INEC’s regulatory role.

As the situation develops, the judiciary’s final determination will likely shape the party’s trajectory.

For now, the central issue remains whether INEC Should Recognize a specific claimant or continue withholding recognition until the courts provide conclusive direction.

The coming weeks will be decisive for the ADC’s internal stability and its standing within Nigeria’s multiparty system.
