IPOB Endorses Sit-at-Home in Anambra, Faults Soludo’s Market Threats

‎…According to IPOB, sit-at-home protests are acts of civil disobedience meant to highlight perceived injustices

‎‎ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has praised residents of Anambra State for complying with a sit-at-home protest in support of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, while faulting Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo over alleged threats to shut down markets in the state.

‎In a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB said the sit-at-home order was peacefully observed, describing it as a sign of the determination of Anambra residents to demand Kanu’s release.

‎The group commended the people for their “bravery and sacrifice,” saying the protest reflected their commitment to justice and freedom. IPOB reiterated that the unconditional release of its leader remains a key objective of its struggle.

‎IPOB criticised Governor Soludo, claiming his government had threatened to close markets in reaction to the protest. It argued that such measures would constitute intimidation of citizens who were engaging in what it described as a lawful and nonviolent protest.

‎The organisation called on traders and residents in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka and other parts of the state to return to their normal activities, insisting that no one should face penalties for taking part in the protest.

‎According to IPOB, sit-at-home protests are acts of civil disobedience meant to highlight perceived injustices and should not be met with forceful responses. The group maintained that democracy requires tolerance of dissent and respect for free expression.

‎It further urged elected leaders to focus on dialogue and advocacy, especially on the issue of Kanu’s detention rather than engaging in confrontations with the public.

‎IPOB concluded by appealing to its supporters and the broader Igbo community to remain calm and law-abiding, while restating that its foremost demand is the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
