Kano Governor Defects from NNPP Alongside Lawmakers, LG Chairmen

…The Kano state governor explained that his decision followed careful consideration

KANO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially withdrawn his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), alongside 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

According to the statement, Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, notifying the party of his resignation with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.

In the letter, the governor expressed gratitude to the NNPP for offering him a platform to advance his political career since 2022 and for the support he enjoyed from party leaders and members across Kano State.

He, however, noted that the party had recently been plagued by internal leadership disputes and prolonged legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts.

Yusuf said the persistent disagreements had eroded unity within the party and deepened divisions among members at both the state and national levels.

The Kano state governor explained that his decision followed careful consideration and was driven by what he described as the overall interest of the people of the State.

He emphasised that the move was made in good faith and without animosity, reaffirming his commitment to peace, unity and the continued development of the state.

The statement added that the governor’s resignation was announced simultaneously with that of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers and 44 local government chairmen.

Meanwhile, the NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward Secretary, Kabiru Zubairu, confirmed receipt of the governor’s letter and praised Yusuf’s performance in areas such as infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education and economic empowerment.

Zubairu acknowledged the lingering crisis within the party and said its leadership had no choice but to accept the resignation of what he described as one of the party’s most performing governors.

Yusuf’s defection comes just days after his closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, a development that had sparked speculation over his future political alignment.
