ONITSHA, NIGERIA — The iNews Times | The Onitsha North Local Government Council has issued a final reminder to owners and occupants of illegal structures at the Main Market, confirming that demolition will commence from Sunday, March 1, 2026.
In an official notice dated February 26, 2026, and signed by the Mayor/Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government, Anthony Nwora, the council reiterated that affected structures are located at Park 1, Park 2, and Park 3 within the Main Market.
According to the statement, the affected occupants were earlier served a 14-day notice which expired on February 14, 2026. Following appeals from the traders, the council granted an additional 14-day extension, set to expire on February 28, 2026.
The council made it clear that no further extensions would be entertained. Demolition of the identified illegal structures will begin anytime from March 1, 2026.
“All those who still have any valuables in those structures are advised to remove such items before Sunday 1st March 2026,” the notice stated.
The development signals a firm stance by the Onitsha North Local Government in enforcing urban planning regulations within the busy commercial hub. The Main Market, one of the largest trading centers in the region, has long grappled with congestion and unauthorized structural expansions.
With the extended deadline drawing to a close, traders and occupants are expected to comply to avoid losses as enforcement begins in the coming days.
The council has not indicated any further postponement, underscoring its resolve to proceed with the demolition as scheduled.
