ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Markets in Onitsha recorded a reasonable level of compliance on Monday, as traders heeded the directive of Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to resume business activities across the state.
Our correspondent who monitored activities at the markets, reported that a number of traders turned up for business. She added that there was a visible presence of security operatives within and around the market.
However, she noted that some schools in the area remained shut, while trading activities at the New Parts Market, Nkpor, were relatively low.
Traders in some of the Markets during an interview expressed happiness over the resumption of trading activities. They however, acknowledged that some of their neighbours are yet to return to the markets.
Meanwhile, our correspondent in Awka, the state capital, reported full compliance at the Anambra State Secretariat, with civil servants resuming work as directed. He also observed that transport activities had picked up across the capital.
He further noted that some schools were open, adding that a number of them had resumed even before the governor’s directive.
”Teachers, students and pupils in Awka today turned out in their numbers following the directive by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on the Monday sit-at-home”.
Our Correspondent who visited some schools within the state capital reports that academic activities were in top gear at Bright Star Academy, Ifite Awka; St Lucy International Secondary School Ifite-Awka, & Girls Secondary School Amaenyi.
In an interview, the Principal of Girls Secondary School Amaenyi, Dr Ndidi Okeke said her school has been complying with Monday school activities since last year even before the recent ultimatum by Governor Soludo.
She noted that the only problem they experience is parents constantly calling to know why the school must open when there is sit at home.
At the State Secretariat (Jerome Udorji Secretariat) Awka, civil servants came in their numbers to work, as both human and vehicular activities were sight in the area.
Efforts to speak with the Head of Service, Barr Mrs Theodora Igwegbe proved abortive as she claimed to be in a meeting.
Recall that the Anambra State Government said it will implement a pro-rata salary policy for all civil servants, including teachers, starting February 2026 to combat the Monday “sit-at-home” culture.
The iNews Times gathered that commercial banks were opened with about 30% of customers turning out for businesses, a situation some staff said, is not encouraging to them.
