Anambra State government speaks on New Airport rumour

…says there are currently no approved plans for a new airport in Anambra.

AWKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Anambra State Government has denied reports claiming it plans to construct a new airport in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area, describing the story as “false and speculative.”

In a press statement released on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, clarified that there are currently no approved plans for a new airport in that part of the state. The rumours, he said, appear to stem from a recent government visit to the site of the Anambra Mixed-use Industrial City (AMIC) – a 4,000-hectare mega-development initiative anchored on sustainable industrialization and urban renewal.

“It is believed that the speculators may be following the recent visit to the Anambra Mixed-use Industrial City, with some possibly assuming that the industrial park would require its own airport,” the statement read.

Dr. Mefor emphasized that while multimodal transport systems, including rail and air infrastructure, are part of the broader studies under the AMIC master plan, no decision has been made yet regarding the construction of a new airport.

“In alignment with Mr Governor’s Urban Renewal Plan, multimodal transport systems… are being studied as part of the AMIC master plan to ensure long-term economic and infrastructural sustainability,” he said, stressing that the recent site visit was solely for technical investigations.

The AMIC project itself is an ambitious, futuristic city design that includes industrial hubs, a pharmaceutical zone, tourism corridors, innovation centers, and residential communities. It is envisioned to become a global-standard economic zone and a catalyst for regional development.

However, the government made it clear that any decision on whether to build a railway or airport to service AMIC will be made in the future and duly communicated via official channels.

The statement concluded with a stern warning to the public to disregard misleading reports and rely solely on government communications regarding major projects.
