Niger Flood Disaster

…National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission says preliminary reports indicate the flood disaster swept hundreds of properties, left several persons, including children, unaccounted for

The iNews Times reports that a devastating flood disaster has struck two communities in Mokwa town, Niger State, resulting in the death of 21 persons and leaving over 10 people missing.

The affected communities are Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa Local Council.

The iNews Times gathered that the incident occurred during a heavy downpour that lasted several hours, causing surging floodwaters to submerge and wash away over 50 homes with their occupants.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the report, stating that a search and rescue operation is ongoing to save survivors and recover bodies.

“NSEMA is in receipt of the report of a deadly flood disaster that ravaged two communities. Twenty-one corpses have so far been recovered of those who sadly lost their lives in the incident, while over 10 persons are still missing as the search and rescue operation is still ongoing,” Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director-General of NSEMA said.

The agency, in collaboration with Mokwa council authorities, local divers, and volunteers, is conducting the search and rescue operation.

Three persons, including a woman and her two children, have been rescued and are receiving treatment at Mokwa General Hospital.

The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has expressed shock at the development, stating that preliminary reports indicate that the flood swept away hundreds of properties and left several persons, including children, unaccounted for.

The incident highlights the need for effective disaster management and mitigation measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the search and rescue operation continues, the affected communities are left to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating flood disaster, iNews Times reports.
