Peter Obi as Labour Party says no plans to expel him from party

Nigeria – The iNews Times reports that the Labour Party has strongly refuted claims that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been expelled, describing the allegation as a desperate attempt by disgruntled former officials to undermine both the party and ongoing political coalition efforts.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, warned the public about what he called a coordinated plan by former national chairman Julius Abure and a group of ex-NWC members to mislead Nigerians.

These individuals, the party said, were removed by a Supreme Court ruling and have no authority to speak for Labour.

According to Asogwa, “These political jesters, unknown to the party but parading themselves as members, are acting on behalf of shadowy interests. They intend to stage a kangaroo meeting aimed at creating confusion and spreading falsehood about Mr. Peter Obi’s status in the party.”

He further dismissed their actions as both “laughable and illegal,” saying the alleged expulsion plot has no legal foundation and should be ignored by Nigerians.

The party reaffirmed its support for Obi’s role in a broader coalition aimed at addressing national challenges, insisting that he continues to enjoy the full endorsement of the party’s legitimate leadership.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Labour Party, through a widely circulated statement issued on the 25th of May, 2025, made it categorically clear that Mr. Peter Obi’s involvement in the coalition talks enjoys the full backing and blessing of the leadership of the Party,” the statement noted.

Asogwa called on the public to disregard what he described as “the desperate rantings of these meddlesome interlopers whose only mission is to undermine the credibility and towering influence of Mr. Peter Obi.”

He characterized their actions as “the desperate last kick of a dying horse,” warning that their relevance, which he claimed is tied solely to attacking Obi, will vanish once he officially joins the emerging coalition platform.

Referencing the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025 judgment, Asogwa emphasized that the individuals involved in the plot were long removed from office, and thus have no moral or legal standing to speak on behalf of the party.

“The public is therefore strongly advised to treat any statement emanating from these impostors as null and void,” the statement concluded.

“For accurate and credible information regarding the affairs of the Labour Party, members of the public and the media should, as usual, refer only to the office of the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman.”
