…Otti explained that the legislation is meant to enhance the workability of the Supreme Court’s directive, not undermine it.

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti has defended the state’s recently passed local government law, The iNews Times reports.

According to the governor, the LG law aligns with the Supreme Court’s judgement on local government autonomy and the direct payment of federal allocations.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing at Government House, Umuahia, Otti explained that the legislation is meant to enhance the workability of the Supreme Court’s directive, not undermine it.

According to the governor, the law was carefully crafted to avoid friction while ensuring local councils can function effectively within their financial capabilities. “Our intention is to ensure smooth implementation,” he said.

Adding that “If you leave local governments to shoulder salaries, healthcare, and security alone, some would simply collapse. That’s the reality.”

The governor’s comments come amid criticisms regarding the performance of local government chairmen elected in November 2024.

However, Governor Otti dismissed these claims as unfounded, insisting that the chairmen are performing creditably.

In a separate update, Governor Otti reported a successful security operation in Ugwunagbo, where a criminal camp was dismantled by security forces.

While one soldier was lost in the operation, the governor said several arrests were made and major exhibits recovered.

“We took down the camp and arrested many. The loss of a soldier is painful, but we’re winning the fight against criminality,” Otti noted.

The Abia governor also highlighted ongoing infrastructure efforts in the state, revealing that his administration is addressing road and erosion challenges in Lodu, Okpo, Ariam Usaka, and Umuchime Ossah to improve connectivity and safety in rural areas.
