…”Oyewole’s head was smashed with heavy stones, killing him on the spot”, the source said.

OSUN, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | Oyewole, a former unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has become the subject of a police investigation following his alleged killing by suspected hoodlums in Osogbo on Sunday, according to the Osun State Police Command.

The incident sparked tension in parts of the Osogbo metropolis, particularly around major motor parks, as individuals believed to be associates of the deceased were seen moving about the parks, allegedly in search of those responsible for Oyewole’s death.

Oyewole, who served as part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit between 2018 and 2022, was reportedly attacked around Elelede Junction in the afternoon. As of the time of filing this report, the exact circumstances surrounding the killing had not been fully established.

An eyewitness, who spoke to The iNews Times on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said suspected hoodlums had stationed themselves at Elelede Junction, allegedly extorting money from passersby under the pretext of raising funds for a planned carnival.

According to the witness, a motorcycle carrying two passengers later arrived at the scene and was stopped by the hoodlums, who forced the riders to dismount and began assaulting them.

“I heard gunshots during the attack. One of the victims was later identified as Kazeem. They brought heavy stones and smashed his head, killing him on the spot. The other person managed to escape with an injury,” the source said, adding that the attackers fled before police operatives arrived.

A shop owner at Elelede Junction, identified simply as Basira, said the violence abruptly disrupted commercial activities in the area.

She explained that NURTW members who arrived after the incident identified the deceased as Kazeem Oyewole, a former part-time chairman of an NURTW unit along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road in the Aregbe area.

A visit by our correspondent to Old Garage and Aregbe motor parks on Sunday evening revealed a tense atmosphere, with many residents staying away from the parks for fear of reprisals. The presence of suspected hoodlums was also observed in the areas.

Confirming the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had commenced a full investigation into the killing.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Orita Elelede in Osogbo. Our operatives were immediately deployed, but unfortunately, one person was confirmed dead. He was identified as Kazeem, other name unknown. Investigation has commenced,” Ojelabi said.

When asked about security measures to prevent further escalation, he added that the situation was being closely monitored and that security presence around motor parks had been intensified.

The killing adds to a string of violent incidents involving NURTW leaders in Osun State. On November 27, 2025, another prominent NURTW leader, Adeboye Ademoroti, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Ilesa under circumstances that remain unclear.
