ANAMBRA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Anambra State Police Command has rescued a three-year-old boy earlier reported missing in the state and arrested six members of a child-stealing and trafficking syndicate operating across Anambra, Enugu, and Lagos states.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operation followed a report of child theft lodged by the victim’s family on September 4, 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ikenga explained that officers from the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, immediately launched a detailed investigation.

He added that the probe led to the arrest of the prime suspect, Samuel Ibe, whose confession resulted in the capture of his mother, Agatha Ejeweh (35), and his younger brother, Ejeweh Chigozie Chidera (15).

The statement partly read:

“The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a three-year-old boy earlier reported missing in the state and apprehended six members of a child-stealing and trafficking network operating across Anambra, Enugu, and Lagos states.

“Following a petition from the victim on September 4, 2025, operatives of the Gender Unit, State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, immediately launched an investigation into the case.”

“The petition stated that the complainant’s daughter had left her three-year-old son in the care of one Samuel Ibe of Umusiome, Nkpor Uno, while she briefly went to her shop. However, upon her return, both the child and Samuel were nowhere to be found.”

‘Swift investigative efforts by police operatives led to the arrest of the suspect, Samuel Ibe. His confessional statement subsequently resulted in the apprehension of his mother, Agatha Ejeweh (35), and his younger brother, Ejeweh Chigozie Chidera (15).

The statement continued:

“Further investigations took the operatives to Enugu State, where one Angela Eze, aged 30, was arrested for collaborating with a certain Juliet Onah in facilitating the movement of the stolen child to Lagos.”

“Acting on credible intelligence, the team advanced to Lagos State, where one suspect identified as China Cosmas was apprehended, and the abducted child was successfully rescued. The child has since been reunited with his family in good health.”

Ikenga added that all the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The statement further quoted the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, as reaffirming the command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He also warned criminal elements that Anambra remains unsafe for any form of unlawful activity.
