LAGOS, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a disturbing viral video showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in smoking, drinking, and dancing inside what appears to be a school hostel.
The incident, believed to have occurred in April 2025 at the boys’ hostel of the private college, resurfaced on social media this week, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for stricter supervision in secondary schools.
In response to the viral clip, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division, which had already questioned the college’s principal.
Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, in a statement on Thursday, confirmed that the principal who also owns the school, admitted that the students featured in the video had graduated from the college earlier this year.
Despite this, the police say the matter remains serious and is being pursued to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed the SCID to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation,” Adebisi said. “The school is cooperating fully with our investigators to unravel all circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The statement emphasized that the Command views the matter as a threat to discipline and morality in educational institutions.
“The Command calls on all school authorities, both public and private, as well as parents and guardians, to take proactive steps in properly supervising and guiding their children and wards,” Adebisi added.
He warned that schools must not overlook signs of moral breakdown among students, stressing that such lapses can spiral into criminal behaviour if left unchecked.
“The police will not tolerate negligence on the part of school authorities. Every stakeholder has a responsibility to instil good behaviour, moral values, and discipline in our young people. Misconducts like this, if ignored, can grow into larger societal problems,” he said.
Adebisi assured that the findings of the investigation would be made public once concluded, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any disturbing activities within schools.
“The Command remains steadfast in its mission to ensure peace, security, and orderliness across Lagos State,” he stated. “We encourage parents, guardians, and community leaders to partner with schools and law enforcement in raising responsible and morally upright youths.”
The incident has reignited national conversation on the boundaries of school responsibility, parental involvement, and the growing influence of social media on youth behaviour.
