…says the initiative will improve access to decent and affordable housing for civil servants and low-income households.
Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times, The Anambra State Government has announced plans to begin the construction of 10,000 housing units for civil servants and low-income earners at Isiagu in Awka South Local Government Area. The project will be executed through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement involving real estate developers committed to boosting the state’s housing profile.
The Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Paully Onyeka, disclosed this in Awka while appearing before the House Committee on Appropriation for the defense of his ministry’s 2026 budget. He explained that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo had long approved the project, but its commencement was delayed by last-minute issues between the government and private sector partners. According to him, the challenges have now been resolved, paving the way for the project to take off during the dry season.
Onyeka described the initiative as a “very well-structured plan” that will significantly improve access to decent and affordable housing for civil servants and low-income households. He added that the governor’s development philosophy has reshaped several sectors, beginning with strategic road infrastructure that has opened up new estate locations across the hinterlands, making property development more feasible and accessible.
He further noted that the Ministry of Housing, despite being a service-oriented ministry, plays a critical technical role in executing several building projects across government ministries, departments, and agencies. He cited examples such as the upgrade of Ekwueme Square, improvements at the Commissioners’ Quarters, and the construction of the Trauma Centre at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Amaku, Awka. According to him, these projects were undertaken even though they were domiciled under different agencies, adding that the ministry’s expertise makes it central to the state’s infrastructure development.
Onyeka, a former lawmaker who represented Ekwusigo Constituency, commended the State House of Assembly for its thorough approach to the budget defense process. He said ministries must be accountable to the public by demonstrating prudent use of funds and aligning their activities with the government’s broader mandate and development philosophy.
Other ministries that appeared before the legislature for their appropriation defense included Agriculture and Environment.
