Rivers Assembly Yet to Reconvene Amid Impeachment Plot

…the Rivers State Lawmakers have not given any official reason for the failure to resume plenary, and no new date has been announced.

RIVERS, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, did not reconvene for plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its previous sitting.

The iNews Times reports that at its first sitting of 2026, held last Thursday, the Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct. The accusations include the demolition of the Assembly complex and the expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, among others. The House had adjourned the sitting to January 15, 2026.

However, by noon on Thursday, January 15, 2026, checks by our correspondent at the Assembly’s temporary sitting venue, the conference hall of its legislative quarters along Aba Road showed no indication that lawmakers would reconvene.

No official reason from the Rivers Lawmakers has been given for the failure to resume plenary, and no new date has been announced.

Attempts to obtain clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls or messages as of the time of filing this report.
