AWKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times reports that in a symbolic and unifying move, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has restored the original name of Abakaliki Street in Awka, Anambra State, reversing its 2018 renaming to Club Road under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano.
The restored street name holds deep historical and sentimental value, particularly for elder statesman Pa. Peter Uzodimma, who personally cleared and graded the road in 1975 before officially registering it with the relevant authorities. His efforts, now etched in the fabric of the street’s identity, have long symbolized the enduring bond between the peoples of Anambra and Ebonyi States.
The renaming of Abakaliki Street to Club Road had sparked criticism and disappointment in certain quarters, with cultural stakeholders and concerned citizens calling for its reversal in the spirit of unity and mutual respect. Many saw the change as a disservice to the shared history and cordial relations between the two neighboring states.
By restoring the original name, Governor Soludo has been widely praised for his sensitivity to historical continuity and cultural diplomacy. His decision is being interpreted as a clear message that names matter–not just as markers of place, but as vessels of memory, identity, and respect.
“Abakaliki Street is more than a name,” Pa. Uzodimma said. “It is my contribution to history.”
The restoration has been lauded as a thoughtful gesture of reconciliation, especially at a time when regional harmony is essential. Political observers note that Soludo’s action reflects a leadership style that honors legacy while fostering inclusivity and cross-state solidarity.
As calls grow across Nigeria for greater cultural preservation and regional integration, Soludo’s decision may well stand as a benchmark for how political authority can be used to protect the past while shaping a more unified future.
