STEM education in Anambra: ASUBEB hails Soludo’s investments in science, technology

…noting that STEM education in Anambra is helping to nurture creativity, innovation.

Awka, Nigeria — The iNews Times reports that the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has lauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his strategic leadership, policy direction and huge investments strengthening STEM education in Anambra, innovation and technology to make children in the state productive locally and globally.

Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, made the commendation at the 5th edition of the Science and Technology Exhibition for Public Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in the state.

The event, organised at the ASUBEB headquarters in Awka, showcased the growing impact of STEM education in Anambra, as young scientists displayed innovations developed with materials sourced from their immediate environment.

According to the ASUBEB boss, the future of any society depends on the quality of education offered to its young population, noting that STEM education in Anambra is helping to nurture creativity, innovation and scientific curiosity among learners.

She described the exhibition as part of the Board’s commitment to strengthening practical learning and supporting the implementation of the newly introduced curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

“This exhibition aligns with the state government’s commitment to STEM education in Anambra, as reflected in innovations such as solar panels, CCTV systems, fashion and design products, electronics, grinding machines and water dispensers produced by the learners.

“It also provides a unique platform for pupils and students to demonstrate practical knowledge, originality and problem-solving skills through science and technology-driven ideas needed to adapt and excel in a rapidly evolving global environment,” she said.

In a keynote address, Prof. Dennis Aribodor, who spoke on the theme “STEM and Society,” stressed that STEM is about people, society and the choices made about knowledge that can produce a functional society.

Aribodor, a professor of Public Health Parasitology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, called for innovation with responsibility, urging that STEM learning be guided by ethics, equity and sustainability to ensure lasting societal impact.

He appealed to educators, policymakers, industry leaders, parents and learners to leverage STEM education in Anambra to shape a better society.

Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Mrs. Susan Offiaeli, described the exhibition as a “catch-them-young” strategy, noting that science and technology remain critical to national development, healthy living, economic growth and societal transformation.

Desk Officer, Science and Technology, ASUBEB Awka, Mrs. Edith Egbunike, said the exhibition represents one of the strong foundations laid to advance competitive STEM education in Anambra, under the theme “STEM and Society.”

She explained that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics provide children with foundational knowledge and skills necessary for entrepreneurship and academic advancement.

Highpoints of the event included inspection of student projects, parade by the six educational zones in the state, cultural dances, drama presentations and award ceremonies for outstanding schools in the Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) competition.
