President Bola Tinubu confers National Honours

…notable awardees of the National Honours are Prof. Wole Soyinka and the late Kudirat Abiola.

The iNews Times reports that Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu on Thursday, announced national honours for dozens of Nigerians as part of events marking Democracy Day.

The announcement was made during his State of the Nation address at the National Assembly.

Among the notable national honours awardees are Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, who was conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), and the late Kudirat Abiola, who received a posthumous Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) title.

Other notable honorees include Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and other members of the Ogoni Nine, who were honoured posthumously. Tinubu also granted them a presidential pardon.

The President also conferred national honours on several other individuals, including politicians, activists, and professionals.

Some of the notable awardees include Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Pa Alfred Rewane, and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, among others.

In his address, President Tinubu stated that he would be exercising his powers under the prerogative of mercy to grant these national heroes a full pardon, together with others whose names shall be announced later in conjunction with the National Council of State.

The announcement has been met with widespread acclaim, with many Nigerians hailing the President’s decision to honour these individuals for their contributions to the country’s development and democracy.

The national honours are a recognition of the awardees’ dedication, service, and sacrifice to the nation, and it is expected that this gesture will inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
