ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | President Bola Tinubu is set to formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police on Wednesday, following the unanimous approval of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.
The inauguration will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day, according to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was chaired by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional requirements.
Other top officials present included Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service of the Federation, Esther Walson-Jack.
According to Onanuga, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, highlighting his performance as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned commendation for effective crime control.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also expressed support for the appointment, describing it as a merit-based decision rooted in Disu’s distinguished service record.
Wike equally applauded Disu’s professionalism, recalling his time in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit from 2014 to 2015. He further noted that Disu later served as Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command during his tenure as minister, commending his strategic approach to tackling security challenges in the territory.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, formally moved the motion endorsing the appointment.
Disu’s confirmation comes just days after Tinubu appointed him Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
He possesses qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship — credentials the Presidency says underscore his commitment to modern, intelligence-driven policing.
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos.
Like his predecessor, Disu previously worked under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007. While Egbetokun served as Chief Security Officer, Disu was Aide-de-Camp.
