..Uzodimma explained that he chose not to support the return of the outgoing executive in order to facilitate the emergence of a “unity list.”
IMO, NIGERIA- The iNews Times |Gov. Hope Uzodimma has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State to uphold equity and unity in order to sustain stability and ensure fair representation within the party.
Uzodimma made the appeal on Tuesday during the party’s state congress held in Owerri.
At the congress, Mr Austin Onyedebelu and Mr Onyekachi Ibezim were elected as state chairman and secretary, respectively. They emerged alongside other executive members through affirmation and formal voting.
Speaking to party faithful, Uzodimma explained that he chose not to support the return of the outgoing executive in order to facilitate the emergence of a “unity list.” He noted that the consensus arrangement was designed to accommodate diverse interests and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
The governor emphasised the importance of respecting the party’s constitution and adhering to a “charter of equity” to maintain political balance. He revealed that party leaders had earlier agreed to remain united and produce a harmonised list of candidates, a decision he said was collectively supported by all aspirants to avoid internal disputes.
In his remarks, the outgoing chairman, Dr Macdonald Ebere, commended the governor for what he described as firm leadership and discipline. He stated that under his four-year tenure, the party recorded significant growth across the state’s 27 local government areas and expressed appreciation to stakeholders for strengthening the party structure despite challenges.
The congress was supervised by committee chairman, Mr Godwin Anaughe, and concluded with the dissolution of the former executive following a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Amarachi Iwuanyanwu.
Anaughe lauded the governor’s infrastructural achievements, highlighting projects such as the Orashi Power Plant and the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre. He added that the committee was tasked with conducting a transparent congress and submitting its report to the party’s National Working Committee.
Responding to his emergence, Onyedebelu expressed gratitude to the governor for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to foster unity within the party while working to actualise the Renewed Hope Agenda in the state. (NAN)
