…as security personnel conducted thorough sweep of the Zamfara highway.
Gusau, Nigeria — The iNews Times | Hundreds of motorists were on Friday left stranded following a Zamfara highway explosives scare along the busy Gusau–Tsafe–Funtua road after rumours spread that suspected bandits had planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The panic forced many drivers to park their vehicles along the highway for hours, while others quickly turned back to their destinations to avoid possible explosions. The Zamfara highway explosives scare reportedly caused widespread tension among commuters and residents in the area.
An indigene of the area, Adamu Mohammed, told The iNews Times that fear gripped motorists after reports emerged that bandits had allegedly planted several IEDs overnight at the same location where an explosion occurred earlier in the week.
According to him, motorists abandoned their journeys and sought safety amid concerns of another blast.
However, the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, clarified that the police directed motorists to suspend movement temporarily until security operatives could inspect the road.
Abubakar explained that security personnel conducted a thorough sweep of the Zamfara highway using IED detection equipment but found no explosives. He subsequently assured commuters that the road was safe and asked them to continue their journeys.
Although traffic has since resumed, many residents remain apprehensive due to a recent explosion last Wednesday on the same Gusau–Tsafe–Funtua road, which reportedly caused serious damage to a trailer.
