Labour Party Gives Peter Obi 48-Hour Ultimatum to Resign

Peter Obi Faces 48-Hour Deadline to Leave Labour Party

…says the party is aware of Obi’s nocturnal meetings with some Labour Party members, lobbying them to join him in the new party.

The iNews Times reports that the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the former presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi, demanding that he formally resign his membership from the party.

The development follows Obi’s recent alignment with a newly formed opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

According to the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership vehemently opposes joining the coalition, dismissing its members as “power mongers” and “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians” more interested in self-gain than serving the people.

Ifoh stated that the party is aware of Obi’s nocturnal meetings with some Labour Party members, lobbying them to join him in the new party, although some have refused to join him.

The party emphasized that it will not tolerate members with dual agendas or deceptive personas, stressing that individuals cannot have one leg in the Labour Party and another in the coalition.

Ifoh noted that nearly 70% of Nigeria’s population, mostly youths, are tired of the old order and gerontocrats deciding their fate, adding that the new Nigeria youths are dreaming of cannot be realized through the coalition.

“The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party, and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory,” Ifoh said, urging party members to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.

This development marks a significant rift within the Labour Party and the opposition space, as Peter Obi’s coalition move gains national attention ahead of the 2027 general elections, The iNews Times reports.
