ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The factional chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has downplayed the resignation of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing it as a routine step with no real political consequence for the party.
Major argued that Kwankwaso had already “ceased to be a member of the NNPP” following his expulsion in 2023 over alleged anti-party activities, noting that the recent resignation letter was directed only at the Kwankwasiyya movement.
He explained that the party had long adjusted to Kwankwaso’s departure, particularly after the termination of its Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiyya group in 2023.
While acknowledging Kwankwaso’s role in the party’s development, Major stressed that no political organisation should be built around a single individual, adding that the NNPP is now focused on strengthening its internal structures and consolidating ahead of future elections.
Describing the resignation as a “face-saving move,” he said the party has learned from the crisis and is repositioning itself as a policy-driven platform.
In his resignation letter dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso cited shifts in the political landscape and the need for strategic realignment as reasons for his decision.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the party’s National Leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, thanking members for their support.
Kwankwaso also noted that his exit does not signal a withdrawal from his commitment to Nigeria’s development.
Meanwhile, his faction is expected to respond after a National Executive Committee meeting, amid speculation that he may align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he eyes future presidential ambitions.
