NSUKKA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | Grief and outrage have enveloped Nsukka in Enugu State following the brutal killing of a renowned veterinary doctor, Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, who was abducted from his home in Abuja alongside his three children.
Dr. Ogbu, a native of Iheagu, Nru in the university town of Nsukka, was until recently the Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), FCT Chapter.
According to local sources, armed men stormed the doctor’s Kubwa residence in Abuja late Thursday night. They spared his wife, who is reportedly nursing a baby, but took him and his three children away.
Tragically, the doctor was later found dead by the roadside, shot and dumped by his abductors under unclear circumstances.
“They took Dr Ogbu and his children but left his body by the roadside. Nobody knows exactly what happened. We don’t know whether this is a case of assassination or a failed ransom negotiation,” a close source told The iNews Times.
The three children, whose names remain undisclosed, are still missing as of the time of this report.
In a widely shared Facebook post, Andrew Gabriel Ikechukwu, a friend of the deceased, wrote:
“Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, the immediate past chairman of the NVMA FCT chapter, who was kidnapped alongside his three children from his home in Kubwa, Abuja, was found dead. The three children are yet to be released. May God please intervene.”
Another colleague, writing under the title “A Great Loss,” expressed sorrow and deep frustration at Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
“Nigeria just happened to my age-long friend, Ifeanyi,” she lamented.
“This heartbreaking incident has left the entire veterinary community in shock and mourning. He was not only a dedicated veterinarian but also a loving father and a valued member of our profession. His untimely death is a painful reminder of the insecurity that continues to affect families and communities in Nigeria.”
The Nigerian police have not issued any formal statement as at press time, but the incident is generating widespread condemnation across social media platforms, with users decrying what many now describe as a growing epidemic of unchecked violence in the capital city.
The doctor is remembered by many as a vibrant, compassionate professional dedicated to public health and animal welfare. His death adds to a disturbing trend of high-profile killings in Abuja.
Just days ago, Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was also murdered in the capital, although investigations into that case remain inconclusive.
As Nigerians continue to demand accountability and answers, Dr. Ogbu’s death has become yet another flashpoint in the country’s worsening security crisis and a stark reminder that even the brightest among us are not immune.
