ABUJA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has restated his view that President Bola Tinubu has effectively given Ndigbo the Biafra they have long demanded through full inclusion in national politics, expressing confidence that 2026 will mark a year of restoration.
Umahi made the remarks in his New Year message on Wednesday, noting that Nigeria has passed through its most difficult phase and that the Tinubu administration’s economic policies are already laying the foundation for a broad recovery across all sectors in the coming year.
He called on people of the South-East to remain steadfast in their support for Tinubu’s re-election, describing the President as a source of reassurance to Ndigbo after years of neglect and marginalisation.
According to Umahi, the South-East must correct what he described as the error of the 2023 general elections by uniting behind Tinubu in 2027, whom he said has ended the region’s political marginalisation under previous governments.
“Our people will not repeat the mistake of 2023. We will stand firmly together in support of Mr President in 2027. Ndigbo will not be misled again by politicians with sweet words but no substance,” he said.
The minister added that anyone contesting in 2027 would be doing so against President Tinubu, stressing that all South-East governors and himself, as Minister of Works, have a collective interest in backing the President, whom he credited with reopening opportunities for the region and investing heavily in its future.
Umahi further urged Ndigbo to embrace social re-orientation and deradicalisation, arguing that the Biafra they sought has arrived through national integration under Tinubu’s leadership and should be accepted as equal participation in national development.
On infrastructure, the minister assured Nigerians that federal road projects across the country are being adequately funded and closely supervised, promising that many will be completed within record time and to specification.
He also disclosed plans to set up a special task force to enforce the ban on trucks parking on federal highways, adding that the Ministry of Works would collaborate with security agencies to ensure safer highways for travellers, especially during the post-festive period.
