ANAMBRA, NIGERIA- The iNews Times | The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has released a draft timetable for its 2026 local government primaries, ahead of elections scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, across Anambra State’s 21 local government areas.
In a statement on Thursday, APGA National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, said the timetable was approved in accordance with APGA’s constitution and the electoral schedule issued by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).
Under the timetable, the sale and submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms will run from January 27 to February 6 at APGA’s Awka Regional Secretariat.
Opara explained that the screening of chairmanship and councillorship aspirants will take place between February 7 and 11 across the state’s 21 local government areas and 326 wards.
Appeals from the screening exercise are slated for February 13, while ward congresses to select councillorship candidates and ad hoc delegates will be held on February 14.
“The chairmanship primary election is scheduled for February 15, with appeals from the primaries to be considered on February 16, all in Awka,” Opara stated.
He further disclosed that nomination forms for chairmanship positions will cost ₦6 million, while councillorship forms are priced at ₦600,000. Female aspirants and persons with disabilities will pay half of the stipulated fees. All payments, he noted, are non-refundable, and the timetable may be adjusted if necessary.

Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that ANSIEC released the official timetable and guidelines for the 2026 local government elections on December 5, 2025. According to the commission, the elections will take place across the 21 local government areas of the state on August 29, 2026.
ANSIEC Chairman, Genevieve Osakwe, said the commission is committed to conducting a credible election.
“This commission is working tirelessly, day and night, to ensure the successful conduct of free and fair local government elections in 2026. Local government elections are a vital part of the democratic process,” she said.
Osakwe added that political party primaries will hold between December 18, 2025, and February 16, 2026, stressing that campaigns must be issue-based and conducted in open, public spaces.
“Campaigns will not be permitted in churches, mosques, shrines, barracks, police stations or any secret locations,” she said, noting that candidates must also pay non-refundable administrative deposits for their nomination’s year to be valid.
