Borgu Curfew: Panic as Youths Attempt to Disarm Soldiers in Niger

…Security operatives intensified patrol activities to prevent any resurgence of the Borgu curfew tension.

New Bussa, Nigeria — The iNews Times | Borgu curfew tension gripped parts of Niger State after some youths allegedly attempted to disarm soldiers enforcing a government-imposed curfew in Borgu Local Government Area before fleeing the scene.

The late-night incident, which heightened security concerns in the area, reportedly occurred around 10:35 p.m. on March 10 during a routine patrol by troops tasked with enforcing the curfew order.

Details of the Borgu curfew were revealed in a post shared on Thursday on the social media platform X by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who monitors developments in the Lake Chad region and other security hotspots across Nigeria.

According to the report, troops attached to the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, were conducting routine patrols in New Bussa when they encountered a group of motorcyclists along the area near the Nigerian Correctional Service Office.

Soldiers Intercept Motorcyclists During Curfew Patrol

Makama said the soldiers were carrying out enforcement operations following a curfew earlier declared by the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area in response to security concerns within the community.

While patrolling along the Correctional Service Office area in New Bussa, the troops reportedly intercepted several motorcycles moving within the restricted hours.

The situation quickly escalated, resulting in what observers later described as a moment of tension between the security personnel and a group of youths in the vicinity.

Youths Allegedly Attempt to Seize Soldier’s Rifle

According to the security report, some of the youths became aggressive during the encounter and allegedly began throwing stones at the soldiers.

The confrontation reportedly intensified when a few individuals attempted to physically struggle with one of the troops in an effort to seize his rifle.

The youths were also said to have directed abusive language at the security personnel during the altercation.

Security sources said the soldiers responded cautiously in order to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

To disperse the crowd and restore order, the troops reportedly fired warning shots into the air.

The action forced the youths involved in the confrontation to scatter and flee from the scene.

Correctional Service Alerts Police

Following the incident, the Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in the area reportedly alerted the police authorities about the developing situation.

The report indicated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in New Bussa quickly mobilised additional security personnel to reinforce the area.

However, by the time the police arrived, those involved in the confrontation had already dispersed, leaving no immediate suspects behind.

Security operatives subsequently intensified patrol activities to prevent any resurgence of the Borgu curfew tension and to ensure calm returned to the community.

Community Leaders Intervene

In the aftermath of the incident, traditional leaders and community stakeholders were invited by security authorities to help maintain peace and prevent future confrontations between residents and security personnel.

Among those invited was the village head of the community, who was reportedly cautioned and urged to sensitise residents about the importance of complying with security directives, particularly the curfew.

Community leaders were also encouraged to educate youths about the dangers of engaging in confrontations with armed security personnel.

According to the report, the intervention by local leaders helped to calm the atmosphere and prevent the Borgu curfew tension from escalating further.

No Arrests or Injuries Reported

Authorities confirmed that no arrests were made in connection with the incident.

It was also reported that no injuries were recorded among either the soldiers or the youths involved in the confrontation.

Security sources noted that after the warning shots dispersed the crowd, the troops resumed their patrol operations across the affected areas.

The military presence in the locality remains part of ongoing efforts to maintain order and enforce the curfew directive issued by local authorities.

Security Situation Remains Under Watch

Although calm has reportedly returned to the area, security agencies are said to be closely monitoring developments in Borgu Local Government Area.

The Borgu curfew incident has once again highlighted the delicate relationship between security enforcement operations and community dynamics in some parts of the country.

Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and comply with curfew restrictions to avoid unnecessary confrontations that could endanger lives.

Security experts warn that maintaining communication between community leaders and security forces will remain critical in preventing similar incidents in the future.

For now, patrol operations continue in New Bussa and surrounding communities as authorities work to ensure that the Borgu curfew tension does not escalate into a broader security challenge in the area.
